Based in Braine-l’Alleud, Belgium, Claude Mathieu is a Belgian woodturning artisan driven by a deep respect for material, craftsmanship and traditional know-how. Through his workshop Tourna’mat, he creates handmade wooden objects, unique and durable pieces crafted locally with care and authenticity. Claude trained in woodturning under cabinetmaker Denis Paris (Baisy-Thy), learning to listen to the wood before shaping it. Each creation highlights the natural grain, knots and character of the wood. Bowls, plates, vases, candle holders and decorative or functional objects are entirely handmade in Belgium, produced as one-of-a-kind pieces or very small series. Committed to a sustainable and responsible approach, Claude mainly works with local wood species, often sourced from trees of his region and given a second life. This local sourcing supports short supply chains, conscious consumption and authentic Belgian craftsmanship. In 2020, he expanded his expertise by integrating CNC engraving and laser engraving. These technologies allow him to create highly detailed personalised wooden items: engraved pencils, eco-friendly pens, personalised key rings and small wooden gifts. These creations are particularly popular as artisan gifts, ideal for thanking teachers, rewarding students or offering a meaningful, affordable and unique present.
